This morning I woke up and thought to myself, how is it July already? It seems like 2015 has come and gone in a blink of an eye, and what a year it has been so far! I know, I know, it’s been literal light years since I posted last (missed me?). It scares me how easy it is to get so caught up in life and work as I get older.
After the New Year, I made a decision that I would try something new, get involved in something different. I wanted to make friends, and be active. After hearing great things about social sports leagues, at the last minute I forced my roommate into joining the Play Big Apple winter kickball league with me. And by last minute, I mean the deadline was 12:00 AM and we were actually hitting submit at 11:59 PM. You could say punctuality is my strong point.
Ok, lets be real here. I am in no way, shape, or form athletic. I’m generally awkward, sports-shy (new word!), and have a tendency to run away from flying objects. Although I had not played the game of kickball since elementary school, it seemed like something I could possibly succeed at. People were a little more intense than I expected, but it pushed me out of my comfort zone. By the last week, I was pitching and even managed to catch the ball! I know, not a big deal for regular people…but a huge deal for me.
Next goal: making it past first base.
On a serious note, to any new New Yorkers out there looking for social activities, I have to say this has to have been the best decision I have made in my two years in this city. I made friends, met a wonderful guy, and gave myself something exciting to look forward to during the seemingly endless work week. It really changed my entire post grad experience.
Since then, I’ve pushed myself in other ways. Continuing on my “not athletic, but hey lets pretend anyway” streak, my boyfriend convinced/coerced me into attempting to ski. The first time wasn’t too bad. The second time…well lets just say he’s lucky I didn’t kill him that day. I’d show you the bruises and injuries I sustained, but I’m pretty sure I’d lose readership. Instead, here’s a picture during happier times, pre-disaster.
In the mean time, I’ve expanded my food palette. I tried, and loved my first ramen at Ivan Ramen.
In the process, I’ve also become a little picky with my ramen. My favorite so far is Toto Ramen.
And in May, I ventured down to Miami to visit my boyfriend’s family. Yes it was my first time meeting them, and yes it was fairly uneventful (thank god). We had perfect weather, delicious food, and a great time.
Well, that’s it for tonight kids. To be continued tomorrow!
